Found at a local shelter…what the heck is with the split nose???

   The many bones of the skull form separately and fuse later in development - if the fusion fails, you get craniofacial clefts (split nose, hare lip, cleft palate, and related conditions).
   In some breeds - Catalburun, Pachon Navarro, Andean Tiger Hound - this is selected for, but in this dog, it’s a developmental quirk.
   They say a split nose gives a dog better scent discrimination - if it’s true, it’s probably because the larger distance between the nostrils gives the dog stereoscopic smellovision, allowing it to more easily trace which side the scent comes from, as well as more surface area in its olfactory chamber.
